Effective November 27, 2024, the number of days that a Service member may receive Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) has increased from 14 days to 21 days when moving to a permanent duty station within the continental United States (CONUS). TLE is an allowance that partially reimburses a Service member for the cost of lodging and meals when they or a dependent occupy temporary lodging during a PCS move.
In certain CONUS military housing areas (MHAs) that have a shortage of permanent housing, Service members may encounter significant delays in obtaining permanent housing and may need to utilize TLE for longer than 21 days. In these areas, Service members be authorized up to 60 days of TLE. Currently, six MHAs are authorized extended TLE [PDF].
This expansion of TLE supports Secretary Austin’s Taking Care of People initiative as outlined in his memorandum, “Our Enduring Duty to America’s Service Members and Their Families,” [PDF] by easing costs that can strain budgets and cause financial uncertainty during Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves.
