Effective January 8, 2025, a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is now required for travelers to the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland – not the Republic of Ireland) (UK).
DoD military and civilian employees on official orders should be exempt from the requirement.
DoD employees on leisure travel must obtain the ETA to travel to or to transit through the United Kingdom (UK).
What you need to know
Official travel
If you are traveling on orders, you should not be required to obtain the ETA.
Unofficial travel
If you travel to the UK or are on a connecting flight through the UK on leave, for personal travel, etc., you must obtain a UK ETA prior to travel.
Important information
- The ETA cost is £10.00.
- Children, including infants, each require their own UK ETA.
- Travelers apply online or using an app on their personal device prior to departing.
- Typical processing time is 3 hours but can take longer.
- The UK ETA is valid for two years or until passport renewal, whichever occurs first.
- Guidance for Service members traveling under orders is pending clarification.
